Established in 1995, Dare to Dream (DTD) is a nine-month,
elementary-school-based program that boosts self-esteem in children by
providing them access to positive role models. Co-sponsored by the
Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, DTD uses interactive math
and science curriculum, as well as career discussions with astronauts
and other professionals, to get students thinking about their futures
and exploring the exciting possibilities.
The program kicks off each year with a personal
visit from Bernard Harris, who distributes cards with his personal credo
– the ABCs, which stands for ”I can Achieve, if I Believe and
Conceive my dream.” During the first semester, bi-weekly curriculum is
designed to teach students about respect, responsibility and other
values. Second semester curriculum focuses on introducing students to
interesting and exciting career fields. Volunteer juvenile probation
officers visit the schools regularly, reinforcing Harris’ message of
the ABCs, as well as the need for self-esteem, responsibility and
getting along with others. During the entire year, students also perform
at least two community service projects. They maintain journals
throughout the entire year, which are monitored by school officials for
progress. In the end, DTD results in students having an increased desire
to stay in school, dreaming of successful careers and setting their
goals for achievement. Email

DARE
TO DREAM by Carole Allen
Refusing to believe the odds were against him, Dr. Bernard A. Harris,
Jr., rose from humble beginnings to the height of success as an
astronaut, physician and entrepreneur. As a child from a broken home, he
found encouragement from his mother and family to pursue his education
as a physician and later as an astronaut. Harris not only flew two Space
Shuttle missions, but became the first African-American to walk in
space. His drive for achievement is only topped by his passion to help
youth follow in his footsteps through the "Dare to Dream"
program. The remarkable achievements of Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. are
an inspiration to everyone.
